In an all All-IP world they are able to provide nearly all kind of services, from voice to messaging up to navigation and all other kind of value added services. These Over-the-top players have global scale and they are highly agile. They don't not have to think about network invest, traffic volume, complex tariff schemes...
I think the challenge for carriers is, to define their new position in this game. As stated above, many assets (e.g. billing relationsship, location) are rendered obsolute already. I think they still have some valuable assets and experience but they need to move fast.
