@v_Yonkers theoretically, yes, but they've never bothered. They use their phones for texts and stick to their laptops for msn.

@V_Yonkers My kids hardly ever used Facebook. They're dedicated users of MSN.

@V_Yonkers I don't how I can have missed that since (a) I subscribe to your RSS feed and (b) you've linked to my blog. How weird is that? I'm going to have to go and tighten up the guy ropes on my feeds and searches!

@Gryphon No problem.

@Don Guitar I haven't noticed a shortage of anything new among my favourite bloggers. Maybe it's time for a springclean of your reading list?

Your reflections definitely echo my own experience.

@V_Yonkers I'm aware of food addictions, and as far as I know, these addicts also have to avoid the food they're addicted to. I used to be a smoker, and I am the daughter and granddaughter of alcoholics, so I know a little about addiction.

Thanks for the link to the site. There's some really interesting looking stuff, there!

@V_Yonkers Oh, I hear ya! I think Marc Prensky did us all a bit of a disservice there, with his natives and immigrants stuff, leaving us pigeon-holed as people more suited to old fashioned chalk and talk!

@V_Yonkers I think the thing I'm referring to is also called a snuggly - Asda was bought out by Walmart, so they may well be offering some of their US lines in the UK.

Your husband and I have a *lot* in common!

@Garry "I can think of trainers where the more time they spend in class the more damage they’re doing to the host organisation!" Nice one! Me too!
@Nic Glad you're on the mend. Hope your fight goes well. And yes - we can do this!

@Nicola Ha! This coming from someone who goes away on martial arts weekends and does more exercise in the space of a weekend than some people do in a lifetime! I think you're the inspiration, girl. I'm just a pale imitation. But, yes, I have been disciplined and worked hard.

@Garry What a brilliant response. Love it! Thanks so much for sharing your perspective. And of course, there is much in what you say.

I think the problem is that we're looking at the wrong numbers... or adding 2+2 and getting Tuesday.

Assumptions are made by non-learning people about what the metrics can tell them about learning. Mostly, I find that they actually tell very little about learning. They're usually a reflection of teaching at best and attendance at worst.

I maintain that the only real way to tell whether learning is happening is by means of effective performance management. Not one of those box-ticking exercises that are 'done to' the individual, but a proper, grown up scenario of mutual accountability, the like of which is about as rare as [insert metaphor here].

What you ennumerate are examples of poor time management and/or etiquette. You need not adopt any of these bad habits yourself in owning a mobile phone. Let's face it, you could come up with fairly similar list on why not to own a car. People engage in equally (more?) stupid behaviour with those!

Oh, and on the subject of sparks igniting in fuel stations - check out this evidence to the contrary:

@v_Yonkers how odd that you would mention a Bible! In response to Dave's comment, I started to relate my regret over the fate of my great grandfather's Bible, but opted not to post it, because it was a bit whiny.

I used to keep my albums of my kids' photos near the front door, so that I could grab them on the way out in an emergency evacuation!

@Anonymous Much of what you say reflects my own views and experience. I wonder how your granny felt about her daughter's middle class lifestyle? Would she have been proud or would she have thought that she should have stuck to her roots?

@Dave What a lovely contribution! Quite brought tears to my eyes.

My husband keeps a letter written to him by his father shortly after his arrival at boarding school. My late father in law was not particularly literate in his own language (Swedish), and the letter is written in English. That, too, has become somewhat tatty over time, but I can't see him parting with it.

@V_Yonkers Thanks. That's good to know. I am quite happy to listen to lectures (although not all the time, and not just on any subject) but I doubt my son would muster up the enthusiasm!

@V_Yonkers This is true. And all the more reason why we need to present the possibility of a range of futures.
