Also, you probably shouldn’t say “for Linux” but rather “for GNOME-screensaver” and later “and X and Y” if you add other screensaver daemons

So this is gnome-screensaver only just now?

Might I suggest also supporting xscreensaver?

Yes, you can give the themes away gratis. Or you can also charge for them. That doesn’t mean people won’t buy them from the original source, plus the original source obviously made at least one sale

Selling libre content can work. Even though it may seem like you’ll just end up with free repos of it everywhere (and you may well end up with that) doesn’t mean that people won’t continue to buy from the original source: because of trust or branding or just because they can be sure the artist has the content they want

I hope that if a film gets made it gets distributed witout DRM. I realise, however, that you have basically no say in that. Unfortunate.

I guess it’s an issue when your domain isn’t meant to be a handle.

I snagged facebook.com/singpolyma, which matches my singpolyma.net, my twitter.com/singpolyma, and yes, every other account of mine on the http://WWW.

I like consistency. I’ve only once had someone actually call me “singpolyma” IRL, but I don’t really mind it. It’s a name I’ll respond to online or off because the handle was chosen by me to be part of who I am.

@k0an The point is not that you would go from NY to LA, but that train across said distance could service everything *between* NY and LY

Unfortunately, this makes far too much sense for any government to actually implement it

Are the rtmpdump guys finding alternate hosting (outside the US)?

Thank goodness they haven’t taken the results out of Twitter search… tw2omb still delivers me all content :)

Gavin… if the only alternative to top-posting were bottom-posting, you would be right, but both are strongly against email tradition for a very good reason: it makes it very hard to see what is being replied to.

While for you, it may seem obvious what has just been said, that is only because you have just read it. To the person reading your email (especially if they did not write the original, such as on a mailing list) it is extremely useful to put the specific parts of the reply after the specific part being replied to (called intermixing).

Examples below… it becomes more obvious with longer messages, but hopefully you can see that.

Example 1 : Topposting

I agree, that seems like a good idea!

< I really hate what they’re doing.
< It seems like they want to take over the world.
< Maybe we should build a defense tower.

I’d be interested in why you prefer topposted replies? They make things much harder to read for the person you’re replying to.

You know what would have even more influence than the Flash Player? Quicktime. Quicktime powers all the media (or most of it) on Apple tech, and is installed on a very large number of Windows machines as well.

!proprietary !=> theora

There are other free codecs.

Not that I'm against theora, but it's not the only one.

“I can’t get a court to direct him to, say, follow share-alike in CC-BY-SA”

It is my understanding that you cannot do that under any juristiction. If he does comply you could drop the case, but otherwise he has still violated your copyright and you’re entitled to a normal copyright suit, which AFAIK is all you’re ever entitled to.

If he uses it for non-commercial purposes and doesn’t attribute, you can still sue, because copyright gives you the right to be attributed. Unless it doesn’t in your country.

Basically, you can sue him for any violation of your ARR rights, and he can only use the CC as a legal defense. If he says he didn’t agree to the CC license, or if the CC license for some other reason is deemed to not apply, then the work is effectively ARR and he loses.
