I agree with Jeramiah's point. A lot of brands and businesses are thinking about being social in order to manage voices and grumbles, and to gain some cred. Problem is many of them aren't social within their own organisations, yet they strive to portray a public image of being open, social and forward thinking.
Adopting a more open and social business design automatically facilitates a smoother transition towards becoming a more social online.
