I actually noticed the conversation between Brad and Steve, because it showed up in my BackType feed a number of times throughout the day as Brad was commenting. (Full disclosure, I'm a cofounder of BackType). We created BackType to do exactly that -- surface good comments, comment authors, and conversations.
There's more to be done in terms of surfacing great conversations not just by the commenters, posts, and keywords you're following -- but also by velocity of the conversation. I too am looking forward to how new services evolve this year.
Reply | Original | Permalink | Share | TweetAgreed, it’s something we should have in the new year. For the time being you might find keyword alerts useful (same as google alerts, but for comments). You could try either http://www.backtype.com/comments?q=enkerli or http://www.backtype.com/comments?q=@enkerli
Anyways, I don’t mean to hijack this discussion, hope you and your readers find the info helpful.
Reply | Original | Permalink | Share | Tweet@Enkerli, @glaspell we do have a feature at BackType that sends notificaitons when new comments are made on a post: you can check out BackType Subscriptions: http://www.backtype.com/subscriptions. You can add a subscription to this post and we’ll send you an email any time a new comment is made. There is also a bookmarklet available so you can easily add subscriptions.
Hope that helps - feel free to contact me (mm [at] backtype [dot] com) with any questions.
Best,

Reply | Original | Permalink | Share | TweetHutch,
Thanks for the insightful post. Keyword tracking is usually talked about in terms of brand monitoring. But, you’re right that it can also act as a powerful filter for individuals.
Reply | Original | Permalink | Share | TweetHi Dan,
Thanks so much for including BackType. We use many of the tools and strategies you listed on a daily basis. I wanted to add, that as well as managing your own comments and following influencers, you can use BackType Alerts to keep updated by email or RSS on mentions of keywords in comments.
Reply | Original | Permalink | Share | TweetWe understand -- and as you add those subscriptions, the blogs we don't have are automatically added along with your subscription.
Reply | Original | Permalink | Share | TweetYup, I second the recommendation for colloquy.
Reply | Original | Permalink | Share | TweetGreat idea! We're looking into it.
Reply | Original | Permalink | Share | TweetThanks for spotting that. If you perform the change your query to "justin.tv" with the double quotes included it will work in the meantime.

Reply | Original | Permalink | Share | TweetYou're right, we launched alerts a little while ago, subscriptions are the new addition to the alerts service today.
Hope the alerts are working out well for you. If you're looking to keep track of lots of threads on news.yc give subscriptions a try and let me know what you think. (mm [at] backtype [dot] com)
Reply | Original | Permalink | Share | TweetNice update and good to see the X-SUP-ID HTTP header information updated in the FAQ.
Reply | Original | Permalink | Share | TweetWe updated BackType Alerts today by launching BackType Subscriptions: http://www.backtype.com/subscriptions
With subscriptions we'll update you by email or RSS whenever a new comment is made on a post or HN thread you're following.
Reply | Original | Permalink | Share | TweetHi Jon,
No you only need to enter the URLs that you enter in the comment form. For example, above you commented with: http://www.fitmyshop.co.uk/ — If you add this URL to your account then all comments you make using that URL (including the one above) will be attributed to your account.
Here’s a bit more on our FAQ: http://www.backtype.com/faq#q4
Hope that helps.
