I’m using it and quite like it. Sure, the interface and functionality can gain substantially over the next releases but the core functionality (distributed file storage and sharing) is definitely worth it already.

Ah, what a nice day it’ll be when my fiber-connection will tranfer its first bits and bytes :)
Hopefully some other delaying factors will be taken care of as well. DNS-resolving is already one of the major delays I’m experiencing on ADSL. In the coming 7 years better Content Distrubtion Networks will probably be available to lots of sites, so even trans-atlantic sites will load considerably faster. Gladly Amazon is taken up this, normally difficult, job for all the smaller sites out there.

Come to think of it, on what connection speed will they cap it?

Mooi overzicht en leuke links. Misschien zijn dit soort artikelen wel een stap die door veel mensen over het hoofd worden gezien richting web x.0. In een interessant artikel zorgen goed aangebrachte links mij de mogelijkheid om met 1 klik verdieping te krijgen. Niet automatisch semantisch, maar wel intelligent op deze manier. En zeker weten relevant.
Bij diensten zoals Social Median wordt er geprobeerd om nieuws over zaken die jij interessant vindt op maat te maken voor jou. Het is bijvoorbeeld mogelijk om te abonneren op bepaalde keywords en mensen die berichten plaatsen. Hierdoor wordt er een bepaalde kwaliteit klaarblijkelijk gewaarborgd door die persoon en zal hij ook gemotiveerd blijven om relevante kwalitatieve berichten te selecteren door de hoeveelheid mensen die op hem geabonneerd zijn. Ook een site als Backtype zorgt er voor dat mijn activiteiten (comments) over het hele web direct inzichtelijk zijn en op 1 plek staan. Zorgt er direct voor dat de zogenaamde toppers of interessante mensen ook weer iets beter te volgen zijn in combinatie met FriendFeed/Twitter.
Ik weet niet zeker of dit soort websites dan officieel semantisch genoemd mogen worden, want er heerst een sfeer van volledige automatisering en zelflerende systemen. Ik denk echter dat de ‘power of the crowd’ niet onderschat moet worden bij het aanbieden van relevante content. Natuurlijk blijft het op maat maken dan wel vaak steken op het zelf selecteren van interesses en het vallen binnen bepaalde profielen die in een systeem staan. Maar goed, bij een goede uitwerking wordt er flink wat ruis weggehaald en komt er relevante content voor terug.
Google kan volgens mij een enorme slag maken op het aanbieden van relevante content wanneer ze de informatie die ze krijgen met de reclames op miljoenen sites aan het profiel van die persoon koppelen. Ze kunnen namelijk zien welke sites die persoon bezoekt, ook al wordt er niet naar gezocht met Google. Ik denk alleen dat ze een beetje huiverig zijn voor de reactie van mensen op dit allesziende oog, maar dat dit in de toekomst wordt uitgerold als we meer gewend zijn aan de surveillance society.
Het syncen en samentrekken van verschillende apparaten en programma’s kan me niet vroeg genoeg komen. Contacts van mijn telefoon, Gmail, Facebook, Hyves en MSN schreeuwen gewoon om een centrale database of in ieder geval een naadloze synchronisatie. Ook mijn webgeschiedenis van FF3, Opera mini van mijn telefoon en IE bij mijn vriendin zou er voor zorgen dat ik niet telkens weer op zoek moet naar waar ik bepaalde info gelezen heb.
De grafiek met de verschillende clouds voor een gebruiker, wat zijn daar de x- en y-as van? Het ziet er nu wel leuk uit maar ik snap niet zo goed wat er mee bedoeld wordt.

Hi Robleh (?), we are on the same track I suppose, the term ’social search’ is too ambiguous though. Maybe push-search-results, pre-search-answers, personalized-interestingness or something along those lines is more correct.

I reckon Pagerank is more social than officially acknowledged, via Adsense Google knows a lot about those who search, click, view and surf the web. I assume personlized search-results (with the Adsense info) will really take off once most people are used to the fact that Google remembers previous searches. Besides this info, Google can make a step downwards the participation ladder (creator –> critic) when it finds a way to seperately index comments and its authors.
Come to think of it, which does Google really not yet take good advantage of? Critics and Joiners (well, Orkut…) mostly. So maybe there’s a possibility of improvement here?

How you describe the useful information Digg/delicious offers, Social Median is another step in the right direction. I can only guess on how this will develop with magnitudes of users more than they have now.

With thousands of amateurs joining in, the chance one of those amateurs hits 50 good predictions in a row gets bigger. It seems like this guy is a very good doctor, but in fact is just incredibly lucky. Or actually, it is really normal having a few of these 'lucky' amateurs when having thousands of not so lucky ones. When in a casino a roulette hits red 50 times straight after eachother, this roulette can't be trusted to hit red again, chances still are 50% (well, little bit less with 0 ofcourse)

I would trust the crowd, but only if it is made up of trusted people.

For me, core excersises are top priority (chin ups, push ups, dumbell/bench press), so when I work out I start with those excersises and work on specific muscles until every muscle (for that day) is exhausted. Also running every week adds to a good condition.

I take good care in breathing, not because it adds stability (if you’re not stable doing the performance your form is wrong or you’re pushing above your limits) but because it enables the bloodcirculation to keep circulating and avoids unnatural temporary bloodpressure.

How about showing comments posted on FF discussions? I mean, twitter is supported but I'm leaning towards FF comments more and more. Or is this already possible and am I overlooking it?

@Brian Donohue I’d like to thank you for participating in this discussion. When I wrote my comments, the show you write about wasn’t online I think. That show indeed proved what a good team of journalists can accomplish. The show before was mainly about a disabled kid who does things people without handicap aren’t even able to and is loved for it in his community. Maybe it’s something Americans love to hear, but to me (I live in the Netherlands) this seems like typical local tv news.
I’m not sure if (local) newspapers should get on the video-train, it is a completely different experience in both consuming and producing. Maybe blogging is closer to where you guys are very good at, reporting in writing. Also it’s easier to know if it is interesting for me to read, video’s are notoriously linear and aren’t divided in clearly distinguishable chapters like newspaper segments. Maybe one topic per show, and several shows per day, will make the difference…
Anyway, if I was from New Jersey I would watch every show but I would probably still feel like it could be better, so keep it up and keep trying new things

@Jeff Jarvis I didn’t mean to set up anyone versus anyone. Getting people to participate on local issues is essential for local news and taking the lead can bring some great stuff. For example, asking people to shoot video’s (or write posts/comments) about a certain topic will get a focused view while still getting a broad perspective. Not having a focus will just bring a cacophony of voices, surely democratic but hardly watchable.

@Not Impressed: You’re right on the mark, it’s nothing special, yet for newspapers it is. They’ll have to take quite some more steps to get a real source of news with this news-video, there are better ones on youtube by amateurs, but at least they’re trying.
