What is BackType?

BackType is a service that lets you find, follow and share comments from across the web. Whenever you fill out the "Website" or "URL" field in a comment form when you publish a comment on a blog or other website, BackType attributes it to you. We give comment authors a profile featuring all the comments they've written on the Internet. Learn more.

Which blogs and services does BackType support?

We currently support thousands of blogs and a select list of other services. We're always adding more – if you would like a specific blog or service to be added, let us know.

How do I confirm my e-mail address?

After you sign up with a valid e-mail address, you should receive an e-mail with a link to verify your address. If you do not receive the verification e-mail, please send us an e-mail specifying the account you would like to verify and we'll gladly assist you.

How do I get my comments on my profile?

Visit your claim comments page and input the website addresses you enter in the "Website" or "URL" field in comment forms (example shown below):

This is typically a list of your own websites or profiles on other services. Alternatively, you can visit the people page when logged in and search for the name you write comments with. If you show up in search results, click on your name and you'll be able to claim your comments on the right hand side of the page.

What does the Dashboard do?

The Dashboard shows you all the comments made by people you're following. You can also view the BackType Alerts you've created and read comments that have been shared by the people you're following.

Who can see my comments?

Similarily to the blogs and services where your comments were originally posted, the comments on BackType are visible to everyone.

How can I find people that I want to follow?

On the people page, you can search for people by name. Another way to find people is to fill in your profile – it helps us find the people we think you want to follow so we can give you recommendations in the future.

How can I see who I'm following?

Once you're logged in, check out your following page.

How do I know who's following me?

Once you're logged in, check out your followers page.

How do I customize my profile?

Once you're logged in, visit your edit design page.

What do I do if you're missing my comments?

If you find that we're missing some of your comments, let us know. We'd be happy to get them for you and make sure that we don't miss any in the future.

Can I put my comments on my blog?

We're currently hard at work on various plug-ins and widgets to help put your comments elsewhere on the web. Watch the announcements on our blog so you know when they become available.

How do I remove my blog's comments from BackType?

Like many popular search engines, BackType uses a crawler that relies on the robot exclusion standard to decide whether or not you would like to be included in our index. To prevent BackType from accessing your website, disallow the user agent named, "kame".

How do I customize my widgets?

With some knowledge of CSS, you can quickly and easily customize the appearance or contents of your widgets. Every selector is contained within #backtype-badge or #backtype-shared.
