Great effort, but couldn’t you have gotten someone else to hold the camera? It’s so choppy and distracting, makes it hard to understand what you’re trying to say.

Weekend voting would be great and it either be Saturday and Sunday or just Saturday to avoid any ridiculous objections. By the way, what objections have been voiced, if any, to having elections on Saturday or Saturday and Sunday? I am very curious if there are any legitimate concerns. Thanks.

Record turnout, the emancipation of many disenfranchised voters, the 15% increase expected in voter turn out (totaling 140 million voters) is proof that the system by which we truly “count” every citizen’s vote needs to change.

As we look and finally ask: Why doesn’t the system work? –largely brought to light in 2000 and 2004, we need to look deeper than just hanging and pregnant chads, but how and why was the system created as it was, and persists –not superficially skimming the obvious.
The Rachel Maddow Show dug deep into the archives of film and seems to have touched on the idea that no one else has dared to divulge: there is political gain to be had by low voter turnout.

Case in point: Bill Weyrich, Republican Activist and now founder of the Heritage Foundation, a decade ago explained it most succinctly when he said to audiences: “They want everybody to vote, I don’t want everybody to vote. Elections are not won by a majority of people. They never have been from the beginning of our country, and they are not now! As a matter of fact, our leverage in election, quite candidly, goes up as the voting populous go down.”

To the gentlemen, Mr. Cuilla, I imagine the lovely middle class suburb where you grew up was not plastered with flyers coaxing you to vote on Nov. 5th, stamped with state seal to make it look official. In college were you told not to vote because it may affect your financial aid? Seem implausible? See recent news articles and broadcast media. Here in FL, according to one report hundreds of constitutional lawyers are manning polls to ensure voters (majority poor and of color) are not illegitimately turned away and disenfranchised…yet again.

Let’s, at the very least, try to act like the best limousine liberal and walk in other’s shoes. You can still watch poll results with a martini with the feet up on the ottoman, I am.

Australians vote on Saturday too - totally convenient.

It’s nice to vote, but I don’t think my vote counts as long as the big old Electoral college gets the last word.

But vote anyway.

Given the inordinate length of the cmpaign this year, it becomes even more important to start a push to change the federal election day to a weekend, to remove the stress of having to take a day off, perhaps against the boss’s wishes. More people should become aware of how election day was chosen.

[…] We vote on Tuesday, smack in the middle of the work week, because of an 1845 law set to make it convenient for the largely agrarian society of the time to vote. If the United States government can move Thanksgiving for the convenience of retailers (1939) and Washington’s birthday, Veterans Day and Memorial Day for the convenience of shoppers (1971), why can’t we move Election Day for the convenience of voters? I just worry…given past performances by the US Postal Service, that all the mail-in votes would reach their intended destination.
Here in Chicago, there was a letter carrier, who was literally dumping bags-full of mail under a bridge abutment. Who will be watching them?
Everyone in Oregon seems “ducky”with the mail-in system, seems a bit naive to me to think that the US Postal workers are all above reproach.

Because if you had the election on Saturday, then everyone would complain “I only get two days off a week.. why Saturday? My day off is wasted now”? This is stupid!”

You all have nothing better to do than to complain.

YOU are the problem in this country.

I created another site to get people to carve their pumpkins to get out the vote on Nov. 4th. Yes, carve your pumpkins to help get out the vote. A friend of mine did this in Ohio with his pumpkin, and the idea is so simple and appealing. There’s free patterns, slogans, and some other links at http://www.thepoint.com/campaigns/carve-your-pumpkins-to-get-out-the-vote-on-nov-4

And if you’re want to get your friends for a pumpkin carving get out the vote party this weekend, now’s the time to do it.

Another reason to travel via public transit that day especially, where it’s possible.

I think the gist of Biden’s position is that we need a consistent standard across the board for federal elections and to that I say a hearty “Amen!” Naturally the devil’s in the details, but leaving the details of voting in federal elections to local officials is one of the craziest features of our system.

I would be interested in knowing about Biden’s assertion about weekend voting hurting turnout. Does anyone else know anything about this?

Here in AZ most voters vote before the election. we are that lazy. A weekend vote would give others time to vote the polls should be open from 7 to 7 Sat and Sunday. All Americans should be allowed to vote and that means given the time to vote.

I agree that the week-end would be the best time for most people. Many are hourly workers and having only one day to vote is very restrictive and in some cases impossible. In the last election with the voting booths distributed according to will rather than based on how many voters in a given district, impacts the outcome of the election due to the many who cannot make it to the booth before closing time.

Let’s have a two-day voting perion on a week-end in November and get everyone’s vote. Thank You!
