Yup, Cisco needs to move ‘up stream’ from the data center to the business side. Their doing that now, with not just social networks but with their other communication tools.

Have you seen the Cisco campus in San Jose? It’s truly it’s own city.

Hello Jeremiah. Another excellent piece of shared knowledge. Thank you. I’ve taken the liberty of translating it to Swedish, with some changes - making it a bit more general: helps and tips for responding to any comments about your company/organisation on the net. Of course I’ve cited the source in all representations of the diagram. Cheers.

I find your quasi-experiment interesting.

What makes you think that sponsored links might generate traffic?

Sean, I look forward to our discussion.

Doug, that’s funny/sad. I couldn’t but help but chuckle.

Jeremiah, nice to see a good honest assessment of predictions, including admissions of where you went off track. It’s very helpful to see. But I agree with one of the other commenters here: I wouldn’t be quite so hard on yourself.

By pushing more into the application side, Cisco has a leg up on the the other traditional competitors in the networking space. There was a recent a FastCompany interview with Chambers where he said things learned after the 2001 bubble are paying off now. This might be one of those things: driving more application use increases demand for bandwidth resulting in more infrastructure sales.

From all projections, 2009 will be tough for Enterprise networking sales. By continuing to diversify their revenue in applications and consumer, Cisco appears to be more prepared to stick out the economic downturn than their competitors.

Pingdom shows that the homepages for both of the initial sites load at 18+ seconds. Utterly unacceptable anywhere, especially for a demo site for a product.

Even worse coming from a leader in network infrastructure.

Mark is right (though, you acknowledge the problem in your post). Because you have been very active on Twitter, and because you are in a position of influence in the social media space, experimenting using your blog (many readers of which will have come to you via Twitter in the first place) isn’t necessarily going to provide accurate/typical results.

I’d like to see the results of a test done with a number of different blogs/twitter accounts to see what might be a more “typical” result.

The whole point of this experiment is to ignite “energizing” or word of mouth. So that’s me NOT tweeting.

As I pointed out in the post, although I have decent traffic to this blog, marketers could equally get more traffic to their blog through advertising or other marketing efforts.

The goal of this exercise is to demonstrate how to glean twitter traffic without tweeting myself.

btw,@Vassil comments that the “live site” is not working. His link actually goes to a promotional video on cisco.com that buggy for Macs at the moment.

Much more importantly, as Jeramiah notes, you can see the first version of Eos in action at lauraizibor.com and allseanpaul.com

re: Facebook. Some friends have kids turning 13 and getting on Facebook– and yes, they friend them there- it’s a given. AFAIK the kids don;t mind (much)- and parents are generally involved in the kids’ lives anyway– being holistic in participation is important.

One issue- one buddy friended her daughter, then her daughter’s friends “friended” him. I don;t know if he followed them back, but a profile that shows a sudden interest in 13 year-old girls (even an innocent case like this) begs explanation.

I’m afraid that - if you apply the same rule to your followers - the experiment fails: the sum of all the followers influences impressions (eyeball). Are you sure that you wouldn’t get more visits by tweeting directly?

Thanks for noticing our merger Jeremiah. Jake and I look forward to talking with you about our plans. It’s always been the time, but now more than ever, for brands to focus on differentiating through customer experience and no where is the evidence of the “truthiness” of their brand promise more evident than in social media. We’re excited about applying our experiences as both brand practitioners and as consultants to working with companies looking to drive impact in this area.

Thanks,
Sean

Cisco here. Jeremiah, fair assessment of Eos and the importance of change mgmt/process change along with a new tech platform like this.

Like any new tech, there will be a learning curve with Eos. But with the unified back end, media companies now have a single environment to manage their sites, web assets and human teams — which should give them economies and efficiencies of scale that they aren’t necessarily getting today.

This is definitely the first step in a longer journey for Eos.
