Reply | Original | Permalink | Share | TweetThe power of social media lies in the connections that it fosters between people. Between people attempting to create a brand, and those who interact with the brand/person and create the reputation that person has.
The conversation is still in charge. Branding is an attempt to control the conversation. Just watch what people are saying when you aren't listening.
Thanks for stopping by.
Reply | Original | Permalink | Share | TweetI never really thought about it that way, but it makes sense. A brand is something that we create and shape our-selves, hence closed source. Your reputation is the feedback you get from society based on your brand and how well you where able to perform and act on your word. This is what makes personal branding so difficult.
People can brand themselves as anyone or anything, but it holds no weight it if doesnt get accepted by everyone as a whole. But in response to your first comment you made, i believe that social media IS now about personal branding. Before web 2.0 the regular Joe never had a voice and now has the opportunity to be heard and put their brands out there. With such a massive blogosphere, where everyone can speak their mind, reputations are created and destroyed every day. This I feel is the TRUE power behind social media.

Reply | Original | Permalink | Share | TweetI've had the system for 14 years, and until this year, maintainence requests (all 2 of them) were taken care of quickly and professionally. This year, I had my downspouts routed out to the street. All of a sudden, water started flowing and cascading behind the gutters. After 15 phone calls (and my requesting that I be at home when the guy came), someone showed up while I was at work, left me a note (a bill, perhaps) for $200, and stated "Dirty Nose" ... no problem with Gutter Helmet ... please call me". Well I tried calling for 3 weeks, even tried to fax (it was disconnected). I remember him asking the first time I called if I intended to buy a new system. My reply was that it had a lifetime guarantee, so why would I want to spend another $850.

Reply | Original | Permalink | Share | TweetTotally hear you. It is not ultimately the personal brand that matters, but what people perceive about that brand. A wonderful philosophical point. I would slightly disagree about the packaging though... we all by tons of stuff influanced by the package. A great package is just short hand for a great product. It makes the decision making easier and we are all looking for a little help here and there.
So to my mind, it seems that one of the first easy steps we should take in our personal brand is to consolidate all our stuff in one place. That would say a lot about our personal brand and reputation not least of which would be that we are user oriented and utilitarian because we help people meet us.
After all, It's about who knows you more than it is about who you know and therefore we should make it easy to be known.
