One point to clarify: Koodo is (not-so-secretly) actually a new offering from Telus. Part of the marketing strategy is to distance Koodo from the parent co. (i.e. flabby, fee laden Telus Mobility). It seems to be working, because - lets face it - your average Koodo customer isn't a Math major.

Glad you enjoyed the post, Scott - Suze definitely has oodles of wit about her (and if you're on Twitter I recommend following her!).

In a more serious tone, companies like yours are exactly why social media needs to be clear and transparent, with no false experts or gurus confusing you even further. There are some great people out there to turn to and who'll be all too happy to offer you great advice - you can tell who they are by the non-showing of "expert" or "guru" in their bio, and recommendations from others…

I love the comical twist you put on this. I own a website development company, which means I know software and technology, but as many other computer geeks, I am not as gifted with the social part of social media. I'm learning my way around it, and love the new relationships I'm building on places like twitter, but I have run across many of the people you describe here. I think every person that's new to social media should read this. It will save them a lot of time and frustration.

Nice call on the Richard Simmons connection.

I agree, I do sometimes wonder how adverts get green-lighted; if I was in charge of my company promotion and that ad was presented to me as representative of my business and product, I'd have to question the reasoning.

It's strange how we remember the message, even to annoying adverts. Perhaps the goal has been met then - although if we don't end up buying the product, maybe I should say half a goal has been met?

I'm with you Danny, I find their commercials to be irritating. I somehow associate Koodo with Richard Simmons, but I suppose Richard Simmons is famous because he probably sold a boatload of fitness videos. They have done a good job of making sure that everyone is aware of the brand, and their kiosks look pretty slick. I would have loved to have been in the meeting where the marketing guys pitched this to the boss ; )

Companies that employ tacky creative in their advertising take a risk with their overall brand image. And it is not necessarily the tacky ads that "sell" the product - it is generally the unrelenting media frequencies that create TOMA. I'm reminded of Dick Enrico and 2nd Wind Exercise Equipment. Everywhere you looked - there was Dick. It worked for him, but not necessarily because his face was everywhere. Good post Danny! Glad I'm not subjected to any of these ads:)

There is a fine line between being memorable and being extremely annoying. That being said, there was a commercial here about a product named Head On, which basically repeated the tag line 3 or 4 times during the 30 seconds it was on the air. I hated that commercial, but I never forgot their name.

22 hours ago Hendry Lee on Choosing Bus Stops

Well said.

You remind me of the double-decker bus used for sight-seeing. It is the experience between here and there, not the destination per se.

Obviously I can't see myself being part of the audience. They seem to enjoy listening to sales pitch.

Such a show would be so boring because it gives the audience no control at what getting shoved into their throat.

But as you said, we all increase the number of views for this YouTube video, which may be reported as success.

I don't know, Andrew - I think you'd have to be pretty good at math to work out the long-distance costs while still using the Telus network

Danny, I’m glad you used a bus analogy and not a train; I’ve had just about enough of trains today…! But that’s beside the point!

I like the comparison of the day to day operations of the business as a journey; indeed, as the importance of efficient operations increases ever more steeply due to the economy, our ability to undertake several actions simultaneously is challenged. It is our responsibility to ensure that not only are we able to ‘deliver our fare safely’, but to ensure that we are able to do so whilst navigating the thousands of obstacles placed in front of us on a daily basis.

Insightful as always, Danny.

When changes are made from the inside out, those are the best changes we'll ever know.

When we allow it, as opposed to fighting it, it allows others to benefit also. Change is good and needed for us all.

Your design is a good one. Your new photo is more expressive of who you are, and Danny Brown is showing more of Danny Brown, not Jo Blo from up the road. I love that.

Sidenote: I cant see the message I'm writing as it was cut off in the comment box about 6 lines ago. Eek! lol, so, more change?

thanks for sharing this Danny - i was only mulling over this yesterday (leaders and followers)… this is a ice way of putting it. I agree with TLR that we dont need any more train wrecks - and i'll add - head ons with cars… so a comfy bus ride is awesome. Thanks for sharing your thoughts xc

Thanks Roseann - it is tough and I can empathize with you completely. Having good memories and good people around you definitely helps.

Funny you mentioned OneNote, I use that quite a bit myself and it's been a Godsend! Glad to be of any help and I look forward to our travels and learning together through 2009 and beyond.

Hi Dan!
I already tweeted how much I love your blog & Twitter profile design.

I didn't know about your loss. In the last year & a half, my fav brother was killed in a motorcycle accident (only met him 5 years ago & we were kindred spirits - both excitable, both took flying lessons…he flew, I got scared on a stall, both started our own businesses), a friend to glioblastoma & my Dad late April to Alzheimer's.

This was my 1st Christmas without my Dad. I didn't know until Christmas eve how awful this holiday would be. I gather yours was similar.

You have so much to give, my life has already benefitted from meeting you here. You make a difference. And I appreciate you.

You're probably the best comment responder on the web! Good luck! And I know what you mean about clutter. Thank God I discovered OneNote & at least print to a file and not paper very much!

All the best of success in 2009.

Thank you Kathy, appreciate it. Loss is always sad, but it can also be "good" if it encourages/motivates the changes needed. I'm going to concentrate on the positives from the loss and help it move me forward, and if I can help move others forward in return, that's all I ask.

Thanks Snow - yeah, I'm a scary guy, I can see why no-one would mention it… I think it has to do with screen resolution. On my screen at the minute, everything is fine, yet on my laptop, yes, the "S" is cut off. Time for some optimization, I think.

Thanks, Kimberly - I agree, change can only really come from within. People can encourage us to change, but unless we're really committed to it, then it's a wasted cause. Hopefully I can continue to encourage both myself and others to help make the changes we all (may) need.

I'll check the settings on the comments box, should be "endless" - thanks for heads-up.

It's one of these "damned if you do, damned if you don't" things, I think. Too much definitely clutters, too little makes you ask more questions. Some fine-tuning never goes amiss, though.

Reply | Original | Permalink | | Tweet

Thanks Darin, and ditto in reverse. Having you onboard as both a friend and creative partner makes things move a lot smoother, and here's to 2009 and beyond.

Hey there Hendry,

That's one of the thing s earmarked for optimization - thanks for the heads up.
