Is it possible to install WordPress on the root level of a site (i.e. http://[websitename].com/) and yet be able to have a custom homepage (i.e. http://[websitename].com/) without using WordPress?

Er, I want to be able to use a normal website (one that I design) on the homepage of my WordPress site. Sounds confusing, I know.
